The green or yellow passion fruit belongs to the passion flower family and is closely related to the purple passion fruit, which is somewhat better known. However, the maracuja has a greenish-yellow skin and is significantly larger than the passion fruit that is often commercially available here.
Passion fruit grows on a climbing plant whose shoots can be up to 10 metres long. The plant originally comes from South America, but is now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
The jelly-like yellow or orange pulp of the passion fruit is described as strong, fruity and tangy-sour. The seeds it contains are edible. Passion fruit naturally supplies our body with vitamins C and B6 as well as potassium, iron and fibre.
Passion fruit can be combined very well in smoothies and juices with sweeter fruits such as mango, banana or coconut. The puree is also very suitable for preparing desserts, cakes and other baked goods.
We offer passion fruit puree with and without seeds. Both varieties are suitable for preparing smoothies or bowls – when blending the puree with seeds you get an interesting effect from the small black dots. We also recommend the defrosted version with seeds as a topping for bowls.
