Pitaya (red dragon fruit)

The red dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or pitahaya, is mainly native to the subtropical regions of the world and owes its name to its skin, which is reminiscent of a dragon's skin.

The flowers of the dragon fruit cactus only open for one night and give off a beguiling fragrance. Pitaya flowers are among the largest flowers in the world.

The decorative dragon fruit grows on a plant that belongs to the cactus family. While dragon fruit species with white flesh can now often be found in our supermarkets, the dragon fruit with pink flesh is still truly exotic.

Its bright pink, sweetish flesh naturally supplies the body with vitamins C, E and B as well as iron, calcium and phosphorus. It contains many small, black seeds, which are hardly noticeable after blending.

The flavour of pitaya pulp is sometimes compared to that of kiwis and pears or even coconut water and is slightly fruity and mild. Dragon fruit puree combines well with coconut or banana and adds a spectacular colour to any smoothie bowl.

We source our pitaya puree and pitaya cubes from Nicaragua, Brazil and Vietnam.
