Açaí

Açaí berries, the fruit of the açaí palm, which is native to the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, are a traditional food of the indigenous population in their region of origin. Today, they are also valued in many countries around the world as a functional, natural ‘superfood’ and are often offered in the form of breakfast bowls, which are often eaten with granola and banana.

Due to their interesting composition of nutrients and active ingredients, açaí fruits are considered ‘nature's perfect food’. Thanks to their impressive concentration of anthocyanins, açaí berries have the highest antioxidant capacity of any fruit in the world measured to date. They also contain an optimal fatty acid structure, as well as vegetable proteins, calcium, iron and fibre.

Due to their rapid perishability, açaí berries must be processed into puree immediately after harvesting in the Amazon region and then deep-frozen. This is the only way to optimally preserve flavour and nutrients. The unique flavour of açaí is often described as tart, nutty or earthy. Some also recognise dark chocolate flavours. Due to its low sugar content, açaí is often combined in bowls or smoothies with sweet fruits such as banana, mango or strawberries.
